PROFILEThe UP Composers of New Music (CONEMUS) is an organization of student-composers at the University of the Philippines College of Music. Conceived in 1997 and formally organized in 1998, this pool of composers is committed to the development and dissemination of 21st century contemporary Art Music of the Philippines. This group is set to advance “New Music” within and beyond the confines of the Academe through audio CD productions, workshops, symposia, outreach concerts, and lectures of a primarily academic nature.
HISTORYIn 1997, a group of student-composers led by Lilyanne Perez and Gian Gianan organized a series of concerts to provide a venue for performance of their work. Although these early events were successful, these successes were very limited in that the group lacked the support and logistics capabilities needed to launch large-scale projects. After much deliberation and consultation with the faculty of the Composition Department of the University of the Philippines College of Music, it was decided to formally establish an organization of student-composers, then named the Composers of New Music. This embryonic organization was headed by Founding Chairman Rolly Osunero, and Joel F. Cruz, who went on to lead the organization for the last three years. It took a mere two years for the organization to achieve the full realization of the objectives set at the beginning of its conception. Now, we look forward to new horizons.
